I think I wanted to see the upset. I got caught up in Hatton's momentum. I wanted to see this changing of the guard in the upper eschelons of the P4P celestials. I thought Hatton's furious pressure and speedy hands and feet were enough to take a superstar who was barely even paying attention. Conventional wisdom said Mayweather, coming down from 154, should easily outpoint the blown up jr. welter who struggled with Collazo. But I thought Hatton had grown into 147 over the months of largely uninterrupted training camps. Maybe he did, but the size wasn't as much of a factor in Floyd's win as lightning hand speed, superior angles and a pro-USA referee that helped Mayweather score a highlight reel kayo in a career that was already pretty damned exceptional.
So what now for little Floyd?
Retirement? Long layoff?
Come on. If he's Sugar Ray Robinson material he can't hang it up with legit challenges surrounding him in almost all directions. Don't give me "he's proved all there is to prove" crap. He's a fighter, not a franchise. Money schmoney. You can't say in one breath you're better than Ray Robinson and then turn down fights with Cotto, Mosley, Williams, Margarito, and okay-okay, even De La Hoya again. Come on, Floyd. You can't just walk away. I'm betting you're a helluva lot more competitive than that.
